Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe has described the Zambia - China Cooperation as a strategic international partnership aimed at fostering social economic transformation in the country.

Mr. Haimbe clarified that cooperation between the two countries in various sectors is not in any way attracting foreign debt for Zambia.

Mr. Haimbe said this last night when he featured on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Television's Sunday interview programme which was dubbed "Zambia - China Relations."

He said the Zambian Government signed several agreements with Chinese entities on the sidelines of the 2024 Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit which when actualised will enable the country address challenges it is facing in sectors such as energy and transport.

"During the bilateral meeting Republican President Hakainde Hichilema held with the People's Republic of China President Xi Jinping, it was emphasised that we take a strategic position of not attracting foreign debt," he said.

Mr. Haimbe also commended President Xi for formulating a ten-point action plan which has become the blue print for engagements between China and African countries for the next three years.

He stated that the China - Africa Cooperation has evolved into a partnership as opposed to an aid - driven relationship.

"The Chinese Government is bringing something to the table and African countries are equally bringing something to the table. We are partners working as equals," Mr. Haimbe said.

Mr. Haimbe, who is also Lusaka Central Constituency Member of Parliament, explained that Government is working towards creating decentralised linkages with China with a view to enhancing cooperation.

He cited Southern Province of Zambia which was twinned with China's Fujian Province in 2023 as a sub-regional cooperation that can create a pathway even for private companies to directly collaborate with their Chinese counterparts.

"We held bilateral meetings with some of China's provincial heads ahead of the FOCAC Summit. We want to create direct linkages with regions that have companies providing services we are interested in. This will foster a win - win situation for the engaging entity and Zambia as a whole," he said.
