Milenge DAO Recounts 19 Years of Being a Rural Teacher

Image
By Linda Mupemo Godfrey Chikonde After spending many years in school, most young graduates envision themselves working or doing business and settling down somewhere in an urban area. But as fate would have it, some end up in the remotest parts of the country. This is the reality Godfrey  Chikonde  was slapped with in 1999.  He was then a  fresh graduate from Mansa College of Education, having obtained his certificate in Primary Education.  Mr.  Chikonde  was also thriving in his football career and at the time, he played for Mansa Wanderers as a defender, on number four. "I was born and bred in Mansa district. I had never imagined myself working, let alone settling in a remote area," he states.  "My football team members were not ready to lose me. They actually attempted to push for a transfer for me before I even reported for work," he chuckles.  Mr.  Chikonde  did not know ...

The Latest REA Media Award Winner!

Image
And the award goes to.........Linda Mupemo!!!!!! When I got employed in the civil service, I was super excited. However, my excitement was watered down the moment I discovered the place I was going to was not connected to the national power grid. I complained and questioned God's move. Like God, I need this job but do you really have to post me to a place where is no electricity? Where do I even start from? Nearly two years later,  the then lack of electricity in  Milenge  district has created an avenue for me to win the  2018  Rural Electrification Authority (REA)    media award for the first ever Best Web-Based Publication. This is a tale I will live to tell; there is something beautiful on the other side of your dark season. I take zero credit for this. May God take all the glory.  Thank you to REA management and my employer, the   Ministry of Information and Broadcasting services     for this opportunity...

Stains and Bleaches

Image
By Linda Mupemo Picture courtesy of Google Images Is it too late to say happy new year? It has only been twenty days hey, we still have 300 plus days to go.  So, the calendar has finally caught up with my life. I literally started my 2019 way before 1st January. I remember how I could say, "I need to do this and that this year."   I was referring to some of my "2019" plans (which could only be fully implemented this year, whether I liked it or yes). Patience, my young sister,  always reminded me, "Mother, we are still in 2018" lol  I have an aunt who is a seasoned Home Economics Teacher. One of the many lessons she has taught me is to 'treat the stain immediately it occurs.' You don't want to complicate your cleaning or washing by putting yourself through stubborn stain removal procedures. I am learning to apply that in every area of my life. Who says you have to wait for 31st December to switch things up? The momen...

Introducing the Linda Mupemo Award for the Best Writer

Image
By Linda Mupemo One author once said, "To ask me how I feel about writing is like to ask me how I feel about breathing."  This saying pretty much explains how I feel about writing and everything it represents. I started writing when I was in my mother's womb. Scratch that!  That is a talent fallacy. Nobody remembers anything they did when they were an embryo. At least none of those who slept in my mother's womb.  I have been passionate about writing for some time now. I am yet to be a published author, but I know it will happen in the fullness of time. Won't He do it?!!! Before I gave the trophy to the recipient  So yesterday,12th October, 2018, I launched the Linda Mupemo award for the best writer at St. Therese Girls' Secondary School- Kasama. It is official, we are in the future mwe bantu! I believe I do not have to die for people to start giving awards in my name, hello! The initiative is aimed at promoting goo...

Don't Go Naked This Summer!

Image
By Linda Mupemo Winter always serves notice that summer is on the way. When it gets cold, when everything around you is freezing, you are assured that it is about to get hot, it is about to get good!  As summer rears its head, there is a hype in the fashion world about what's hot and what's not, what's trendy, stylish and whatever else.   It is easy to get so immensed in all the trends that you forget you have to keep your temple covered. Yes, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and how much you value it shows in the way you dress, regardless of the season. Child of God, do not conform to the worldly fashion trends, do not let the world make you blur the line between fashion and indecency. You can be stylish and modest at the same time. You can be fully dressed and still look elegant. You do not have to be naked in order to make a fashion statement. James and Constance Phiri showing us how to be stylish and modest at the beach. Baecation anyon...

The Chicken That Was Not Ready to Die

By Linda Mupemo Whenever I share my rural life experiences with my sisters, they laugh at me and say, "Soooo Linda!" It's either rural life is funny or rural life is funny. Anyway, I get to learn something new from whatever I go through. So yesterday, when I bought a village chicken, I asked the seller not to untie it. I did not have the energy to go through the process of chasing after it, I can't even remember the last time I did that!  I left the chicken that way and dashed to the market to get something. I returned after a few minutes and I could not believe what my eyes saw. Lo and behold, the chicken was at the road side. As if it was welcoming me. It had broken free from the string that held it bound!   I thought the string was tight enough to keep the chicken bound until I was ready to slaughter it. I thought it knew somehow that it was in its dying minutes hence would not even try to break free. I thought it had no fight in it.  ...
